Our Mission
Team Walker’s mission is to improve the quality of life for the children of Jersey City through academic and recreation programs that empower the children’s minds, bodies and souls. By creating programs that provide safe and constructive alternatives to the negative influences that plague inner-city youth, and through a structured academic and recreational environment, the children learn the importance of education, responsibility, persistence, teamwork and unity. Team Walker also works to identify development projects to create affordable housing as well as sourcing revenue streams for continued maintenance and operational costs. With access to positive role models and hard-won accomplishments in combination with a heightened awareness of their capabilities, the children and the local community have the opportunity to improve their quality of life significantly.
Our Beginnings
Team Walker was founded in 1996 with the personal savings of Jersey City natives, Jerry and Jasper Walker. Products of the tough streets of Jersey City themselves, the Walker brothers designed Team Walker around the youth programs they experienced while growing up. Jerry and Jasper credit these programs for “keeping them off the streets and out of trouble.” Team Walker continues the legacy of youth programs started by their grandfather, James “Pop” Curry. Mr. Curry’s youth programs provided a foundation of dedication, determination, and discipline which propelled Jerry’s success in professional basketball and Jasper’s on Wall Street. Team Walker passes this foundation onto today’s Jersey City youth.
Our Purpose
“My high school coach, Bob Hurley, used to go around my neighborhood while I was at St. Anthony’s and you never wanted him to see you just hanging around. This helped keep me out of trouble and now I’m trying to do the same and keep these kids out of trouble.”

Our Work is Our Children
Team Walker offers youth academic and athletic programs as well as community outreach programs for families and seniors of Jersey City. These programs are offered through a structured academic and recreational environment that teaches Determination, Dedication, and Discipline, the “3-Ds” that Jerry credits to his success. Programs provide positive role models to encourage students to realize their capabilities, enjoy a sense of accomplishment, and provide an opportunity to increase their quality of life for years to come.
